Hey there! To start, I’m delighted you’re here.

If you’re a beginner and feeling unsure about how to get results with affiliate marketing, you’re not alone. I remember how confusing everything felt in the beginning, especially when I first heard people talk about email list building. I knew the concept and that it was important to have one, but I didn’t know how I was going to build one.

Since last week, I discussed “AI Email Marketing” and explored how AI can help with writing your content, I thought it would be beneficial to focus on email list building this week.

I bet you are wondering how you’re supposed to build an email list when you don’t have an audience, a website, or even a clue where to begin.

Let me tell you the truth: when I started affiliate marketing, I had no list, no clue, and zero tech skills. Admittedly, I was so overwhelmed, but one small shift changed everything: email list building…

1. Understand Why Email List Building Is Important

Most people chase social media followers but overlook their true business asset: your email list. For example, platforms change, and algorithms fail. However, your list? That’s yours forever. When you build it right, it becomes a steady stream of income.

If you want to take your email list building even further, check out my guide on crafting a welcome & follow-up email sequence, it walks you step by step on how to engage and convert new subscribers.

Unlike social media, email is personal. It’s where people stop scrolling and pay attention. That’s where trust is built, stories are shared, and offers convert. Best of all, the algorithm can’t take it away from you. Therefore, email list building should be one of your top priorities.

2. Choose the Right Email Tool (Start Free!)

Choose the right email tool! Systeme.io, MailerLite, and ConvertKit all offer free plans perfect for beginners.

You don’t have to spend a fortune to get started. In fact, many email marketing platforms are beginner-friendly and offer free plans.

For instance, Systeme.io, MailerLite, and ConvertKit are great starting points. These tools let you collect emails, design landing pages, automate your welcome emails, and even create simple funnels. Don’t worry about the technical side; these platforms are made to be easy to use.

In addition, you want to pick one platform and stick with it. Don’t get stuck in comparison mode. The best email tool is the one you’ll actually use.

3. Create an Irresistible Freebie

To start, think of your freebie as a handshake; it’s the first impression you’re making. Specifically, give your readers something valuable and quick to consume. For instance, no one wants a 47-page e-book they’ll never finish. I created a quick starter guide with “6 Easy Steps to Build Online Success in 2025,” Which is quick, simple, and to the point.

Once you’ve created your freebie, the next step is making sure it’s delivered in a sequence that actually converts. My post on welcome & follow-up email sequences shows exactly how to set that up.

Here are good examples of offers:

  • A checklist

  • A quick-start guide

  • A mini-course

  • A video training

Ultimately, your goal is to solve one specific problem for your ideal reader. For example, I once shared a quick tip related to affiliate marketing, not some huge resource, just something useful and easy to apply. It didn’t go viral, but it did start bringing in subscribers. Why? Because it was clear, helpful, and solved a problem they were having.

4. Keep It Simple with One Landing Page

One landing page. One offer. One call-to-action.

Above all, don’t overthink it! Create a clean, clear page that tells people what they’re getting and why they should care. Use a strong headline, a short explanation, and an email opt-in form. Tools like Systeme.io or MailerLite have drag-and-drop landing page builders you can set up in under an hour.

Here’s the layout I use:

  • Headline: Solve a pain point

  • Subheadline: Explain the quick win

  • Bullet points: What they’ll learn or get

  • CTA button: Keep it clear (“Get the Free Guide”)

It doesn’t have to be fancy. It just has to work.

5. Use AI to Write Emails That Connect

If writer’s block hits, say less. For example, tools like ChatGPT can help you write your welcome sequence, craft irresistible subject lines, and even brainstorm content for your weekly emails.

When I get stuck, I turn to ChatGPT to help me with ideas for content. You ask it to do what you want with prompts, and then put your personal touch on it. Here’s a free AI email marketing prompt collection I created from last week’s post. If you missed it, you can grab it here.

If you’re not sure where to start, don’t worry, I have added below a related blog post that breaks it all down and shows you exactly how to use AI as a powerful writing assistant. Remember, AI isn’t here to replace your voice; it’s here to help amplify it.

Here’s how I use AI for email:

  • Write a 3-part welcome series

  • Brainstorm ideas for weekly value emails

  • Draft subject lines that make people want to open

  • Rewrite boring copy to sound more natural

To clarify, use AI to speed things up, then add your personal touch. People want to hear about your experiences and how you dealt with situations. That’s how you make connections that lead to clicks and commissions.

For instance, I used to think I needed to sound “professional” in my emails. But the truth is, when I started writing like I talk with mistakes, jokes, and all, my open rates jumped. Wild, right?

6. Nurture with Value, Not Just Promotions

To be clear, nobody wants to feel like they’re just a number on your list. So don’t just send affiliate links every week. Mix in:

  • Tips and tutorials

  • Personal stories or lessons learned

  • Behind-the-scenes content

  • Helpful tools or freebies

  • Quick wins or aha moments

In other words, build trust, and sales will follow. For example, think about how you’d talk to a friend over coffee; that’s the tone you want in your emails. Ask questions and encourage replies. When someone responds, that boosts deliverability with your emails and builds a real connection.

7. Track, Test, and Improve as You Grow

Once your list is growing, it’s time to get curious. For instance, what subject lines get opened? What types of content get clicks? Where are people dropping off?

Use your email platform’s analytics to:

  • Track open and click-through rates

  • A/B test subject lines

  • Monitor unsubscribes

  • See what time/day works best for your audience

This isn’t about being perfect, it’s about being better with each email you send. Your list will tell you what’s working if you’re paying attention.

  1. Hi Meredith – These tips are absolutely great and I wish I would have read a post like this before I started down my path an email writing and marketing. I originally saw emails in a completely different way… from a corporate way used in my previous 9 to 5. Once I started to look at them as a way to connect on a deeper level. things suddenly changed and I saw some success with my email list. I have found that your point #6, Nurture with Value, Not Just Promotions, was a game changer for me once I realized the connection I was missing with my audience. Thanks for summing this up so nicely and for giving me if you added for my email follow up and communication

    1. Thanks, Ernie, for sharing your experience! It’s so true how different email marketing feels once you shift from that corporate mindset to actually connecting with people. I love that you highlighted the nurturing part – it really does make all the difference when you focus on helping your audience instead of just selling to them. Your story shows that it’s never too late to change your approach and start seeing real results. Thanks for the encouragement!

This is golden beyond words! Must read information from top to bottom – plus you include some nice little added bonuses! Doesn’t get better than that!
It is really easy to get lost in all the information that is out there and that is required to become an affiliate marketer – or to have an online business for that matter! – but one thing is definitely great to remember: the list is the fuel you need to drive your business!

    1. Hey Marc, thanks for sharing this! You make such a good point about how easy it is to get lost in all the affiliate marketing information out there. But you’ve nailed the key thing – building that list of people who want to hear from you is what really drives everything. It’s a great reminder to focus on the fundamentals instead of getting distracted by all the noise. Really appreciate the insight!

  3. Meredith, this is a clear and practical guide for anyone starting out in affiliate marketing. The advice about focusing on building an email list before chasing other strategies makes a lot of sense. I like how it breaks down each step so beginners can take action without feeling overwhelmed. Consistency and adding value seem to be at the heart of making this work. Acting on even one of these tips could be the start of real progress.

    1. I’m really glad you found it helpful. You’re absolutely right, staying consistent and focusing on value are what make everything come together. Even small steps can lead to big progress over time! Thanks for your comment.
