Thanks for stopping by and checking out my latest update. I appreciate all the support as I navigate this exciting, sometimes challenging journey.
This week, I found myself stuck in TikTok’s “200 jail,” a frustrating situation where my videos have been capped between 200 to 250 views despite my best efforts. After analyzing the situation, I realized that the root cause was my content, specifically the lack of engaging hooks to capture viewers attention right away. Understanding TikTok’s algorithm and focusing on creating captivating hooks, as well as collaborating with other creators, are key strategies I need to refine to break out of this restriction and achieve better results.
However, I’ve also noticed a peculiar trend when I collaborate with other creators. While these collaborations are meant to broaden my reach and introduce me to new audiences, they often attract followers who seem more interested in selling me something than engaging with my content. These accounts flood my notifications with offers for unrelated services or products, diluting the quality of my audience.
Additionally, I’ve observed that many of these followers come from the same account or appear to be bots, which complicates the engagement process. This not only skews my metrics but also makes it harder to build genuine connections with followers who are truly interested in what I have to offer. Striking a balance between collaborating and attracting quality, engaged followers has become an unexpected challenge that I’ll need to navigate carefully.
Lately, I’ve been focusing more on providing informational videos rather than sharing personal experiences or highlighting my accomplishments. Since I started my TikTok journey later than most, documenting my progress feels tricky, as I’ve already gone through many of the foundational steps. Talking about things I’ve already completed feels unnatural when my content is supposed to reflect my journey in real-time. I guess that’s my fault for not starting earlier, and now I’ll have to figure out a way to bridge that gap moving forward.
In today’s post, I’m going to cover a few important aspects of growing on TikTok that I’ve been trying to focus on a little more lately. First, I’ll dive into understanding TikTok’s algorithm and how it impacts the visibility of your content. I’ll also touch on the effective use of hashtags, what works, what doesn’t, and how to maximize their potential. Engaging with your audience is another key area, and I’ll share some tips on how to foster real connections that go beyond just getting views. Finally, I’ll talk about collaborating with other creators, how it can help expand your reach.
Understanding TikTok’s Algorithm
TikTok’s algorithm is central to how content is promoted on the platform. It determines which videos are shown to users based on several factors, including engagement metrics like likes, shares, and comments, as well as video watch time. To improve your chances of breaking out of “200 jail,” you need to understand how the algorithm works
- Engagement Metrics: The more engagement your video receives, the more likely it is to be shown to a wider audience. Focus on creating content that encourages interaction.
- Watch Time: Videos that keep viewers watching until the end are favored by the algorithm. Craft compelling content that retains viewers attention from start to finish.
- Consistency: Regular posting can help you stay in the algorithm’s good graces. Aim to maintain a consistent posting schedule to keep your content fresh and engaging.
How to Use Hashtags Effectively
Hashtags are a powerful tool for increasing the discoverability of your content. Here’s how to use them effectively
What Works:
- Relevant Hashtags: Use hashtags that are relevant to your content and target audience. This helps TikTok understand what your video is about and show it to the right viewers.
- Mix of Popular and Niche Hashtags: Combine popular hashtags with niche ones. Popular hashtags have a broad reach but are highly competitive, while niche hashtags can help you connect with a more targeted audience.
- Trending Hashtags: Keep an eye on trending hashtags and incorporate them into your content when relevant. This can give your videos a boost in visibility.
What Doesn’t Work:
- Overloading Hashtags: Using too many hashtags can confuse the algorithm and dilute your message. Stick to a handful of strategic hashtags that are focused and purposeful.
- Irrelevant or Generic Hashtags: Adding irrelevant or overly generic hashtags just because they’re popular won’t help your content reach the right audience and can lead to low engagement.
- Hashtag Spamming: Repeating the same set of hashtags across multiple posts without considering the specific content of each video can make your posts seem inauthentic and less engaging. It’s better to tailor your hashtags to each piece of content.
Engaging with Your Audience
Engagement is a two-way street. Building a relationship with your audience can significantly impact your content’s performance
- Respond to Comments: Take the time to reply to comments on your videos. This not only shows that you value your viewers but also encourages more interaction.
- Ask Questions: Pose questions in your videos or captions to prompt viewers to comment. This can increase engagement and provide valuable feedback.
- Use Polls and Q&A Features: TikTok offers features like polls and Q&A that can help you engage with your audience in a more interactive way.
Collaborating with Other Creators
Collaboration can be a game-changer for expanding your reach and improving your content
- Find Complementary Creators: Partner with creators whose content aligns with yours. This can introduce your profile to their audience and vice versa.
- Plan Collaborative Content: Work together to create content that benefits both parties. This could include duet videos, challenges, or joint projects.
- Leverage Each Other’s Strengths: Use collaborations to showcase different styles and ideas. This can bring fresh perspectives to your content and help you stand out.
My Journey and Lessons Learned
Navigating TikTok’s algorithm and breaking free from “200 jail” has been a learning experience. I’ve realized the importance of crafting compelling hooks, understanding how hashtags can enhance discoverability, engaging with my audience meaningfully, and leveraging collaborations to expand my reach.
By focusing on these areas, I’m confident that I can improve my TikTok presence and break through the barriers holding my content back. Stay tuned as I continue to experiment and refine my approach to better engage with my audience and achieve greater success on TikTok.

Hi Judith,
Hashtags are more powerful than people realize! They help your content reach a wider audience by making it discoverable to users searching for or following specific topics. Think of them as a bridge connecting your content to people who are already interested in what you’re sharing. Using the right hashtags can make a big difference in visibility and engagement. Thank you for your comment.

Hi Meredith – This is such a valuable post for me., I think I might bookmark it so that I can refer back to it when I get back into my content on TikTok. I have slowed Making videos on this platform for a number of reasons. Partially laziness and partially frustration of not getting the views that I was hoping. You have identified an outline several things that are important to me that I need to try in order to get past that 200-view mark. Her blog post is gold so thank you very much!
Hi Ernie,
It’s completely normal to feel frustrated when the views aren’t coming in as expected, Ican totally relate. The fact that you’re still here and thinking about ways to improve shows your dedication! Sometimes, small tweaks in consistency or content strategy can make a big difference. Don’t worry about the views too much, they’ll come with time and effort. Just keep showing up! I’m excited to see you back on TikTok soon, and thanks for your kind words!

Your transparency about the struggles with TikTok is so refreshing! It’s tough when you put in the effort and still hit that “200 jail,” but it’s great that you’re breaking down what might be holding you back and focusing on things like engaging hooks and understanding the algorithm. Collaborations can definitely be a double-edged sword, so navigating that balance will be key. Keep pushing forward, and I’m sure you’ll crack the code soon enough. It’s all part of the journey, and you’re doing the hard work!
Hi Sarah,
Thank you so much for your support and understanding! It’s definitely a journey, and hitting that “200 jail” can be tough, but breaking down the challenges and focusing on what I can improve has been a big help. Collaborations are definitely a mixed bag, but finding that balance is part of the fun. I appreciate the encouragement and am excited to keep pushing forward. It’s comments like yours that make the hard work feel worth it!

Hi, Meredith! I heard an interesting theory once that TikTok slows people’s progress at that 200 mark to find out who will stick with it. After a time, “they” will let you break free of the jail. I don’t know if it’s true or not, but it’s a comforting idea that you’re not doing anything wrong, you just need to prove to the powers that be you’re reliable. Or maybe that’s not comforting! I would like to hear more about how you get started collaborating with others on TikTok. How do you broach the subject and get such a collaboration started?
Nakina
Hi Nakina,
That theory about TikTok is interesting, I’ve heard something similar! It does feel like they’re testing you in the beginning to see if you’ll stay consistent. Whether or not it’s true, I like the idea that we’re proving our reliability. It makes the struggle seem a little more purposeful, right?
As for collaborating with others on TikTok, I usually start by engaging with creators I admire. I’ll comment on their posts, share their content, or send a DM saying something specific that I appreciate about their videos. When it feels natural, I’ll suggest collaborating on a video. I try to keep it light and focused on how it could benefit both of us.
How have your experiences been with collaborating so far? Thank you for your insight on this! I love to learn from other people…
Meredith

I understand being caught in 250 to 300 jail. You try everything to get it going. I sometimes wonder if the effort is worth it. Nice explanation on options you can try.
Hi Scott,
Thanks for sharing! I totally get that feeling, it can be frustrating when you put in all that effort and feel stuck. But I think persistence pays off in the long run. Trying new approaches and learning from what works can really help shake things up. Keep going, you’ve got this!

Hi Meredith,
Learning so much from your blog entries, it’s incredible!
When I first really started looking at how to get out of that “200 view” jail, Dean came back to me and told me to focus on the hook side of my videos and work from there.
As you mentioned, it really can be quite the struggle to find the winning formula!
All the best!
Hi Marc,
Thanks so much! I’m really glad you’re finding the blog helpful. Dean’s advice about focusing on the hook is so great, it really makes a huge difference in catching viewers attention right away. It can definitely be a challenge, but with time and experimentation, that formula starts to come together. Wishing you all the best too, and keep up the great work!
