When I first ran this experiment, I didn’t fully understand how heavily TikTok prioritizes retention and search-based content. Since then, the platform has leaned even more into watch time percentage and in-platform monetization like TikTok Shop.
Posting consistently isn’t enough anymore. You need structure, hooks, and retention matter far more than volume. If I were starting this today, I’d build around retention metrics and AI batching from day one.
Introduction
TikTok for affiliate marketing sounds exciting—fast growth, viral reach, and potential income. However, after testing it thoroughly for six months, I discovered it’s not that simple.
If you’re building an online income and wondering whether TikTok is worth your time… I’ve been there.
From August 2024 to March 2025, I went all in on TikTok. Not casually posting. Not experimenting for a week. I committed to learning the platform, posting consistently, engaging daily, and trying to monetize it through affiliate marketing.
Some videos averaged 300–500 views, a few hit 700–800, and two or three passed 1,000 views.
For a solid 3–4 months, I was stuck in what creators call “200 jail.” No matter what I posted, views stalled around 200–250. TikTok does this to test your content out and see what kind of engagement your content gets.
Here’s what worked, what didn’t for me, and what I would do completely differently today using AI tools.

How Affiliate Marketing on TikTok Actually Works
When I started, I was promoting affiliate marketing offers, and later on, I experimented with TikTok Shop. That’s when I saw my first clicks and a few small sales.
Not life-changing, but proof that monetization was possible.
Here’s what most people won’t tell you:
TikTok can grow your audience, but turning that audience into income takes longer than you think.
You need:
- Consistency
- Strong hooks
- Engagement signals
- Patience
Most importantly, you need a strategy beyond “going viral.”
What Actually Helped My Growth
1. Consistency (Even When It Felt Pointless)
Posting regularly mattered… My growth wasn’t just luck because when I stopped posting, momentum disappeared for me.
Batching content helped me the most. Filming multiple videos in one sitting saved setup time and reduced daily stress. Without batching, I would’ve burned out even faster.
2. Engagement Was Bigger Than I Thought
I originally thought engagement meant liking a few videos, but it doesn’t.
Growth improved when I:
- Watched videos all the way through
- Reposted strategically
- Commenting thoughtfully
- Engage with people engaging with creators
TikTok is social, so the algorithm rewards participation.
3. Hooks Matter More Than Almost Anything
My biggest mistake during “200 jail”? Weak openings. If the first 2–3 seconds don’t grab attention, the algorithm doesn’t care how good the rest of the video is.
Retention drives distribution. Once I focused on stronger hooks, views slowly improved.
What Drained Me (And Why I Shifted Platforms)

Now I’m going to be honest with you, creating videos took a lot of time. It’s different for different people, but for me it took some time. I wasn’t naturally comfortable on camera.
That meant:
- Multiple takes
- Heavy editing
- Constant re-recording
- Mental energy before even hitting publish
Even when growth picked up slightly, the time cost was high, and when you’re building an online business, time is currency.
After six months, I realized something important:
TikTok works, but it has to fit your energy and workflow. For me, Pinterest aligned better. It’s search-based, it compounds, and it doesn’t require daily face-to-camera energy. That wasn’t quitting, that was optimizing.

If you’re stuck at 200–300 views, here’s what I learned:
- Watch time matters more than hashtags.
- Generic hooks kill retention.
- Overloading hashtags confuses targeting.
- Collaboration attracts exposure, but sometimes bots too.
- Consistency without improvement doesn’t help.
TikTok’s algorithm looks at:
- Completion rate
- Shares
- Saves
- Comments
- Rewatches
The platform is testing your content constantly. Once I understood that, I stopped blaming the algorithm and started analyzing my structure.
What I’d Do Differently Using AI

Here’s where everything changes. When I was posting, I wasn’t using AI tools to speed up production. If I were doing this again today, I would never manually do everything the way I did.
1. Script Smarter, Not Harder
Instead of staring at a blank screen trying to think of hooks, I’d use a tool like Simplified to:

Not to replace my voice, but to remove friction.
2. Speed Up Editing
Editing drained me the most.

Is TikTok for Affiliate Marketing Really Worth It?
Yes, but only if:
- You’re willing to commit for 3–6 months minimum.
- You improve your hooks consistently.
- You analyze retention.
- You streamline production.
- You use tools that reduce burnout.
If TikTok fits your personality and workflow, it can be powerful.
If it drains you and pulls focus from your business, it may not be your best platform. That’s not failure, that’s alignment.

The real win from my TikTok experiment wasn’t follower growth. It was understanding this.
