The Frustrating Reality of Online Income

I know exactly how you’re feeling right now. You’ve been at this for months, maybe even a year. Watching YouTube videos, reading success stories, and following every “guaranteed” strategy that crosses your path. Yet your online income is still stuck at zero, while it seems like everyone else is living their dream life.

Why Making Money Online Feels Harder Than Ever

It’s especially challenging right now because the online world has become increasingly crowded and fast-paced. Everywhere you look, someone is promising instant results, viral success, or a “guaranteed” way to earn money, and it’s easy to get pulled in every direction.

Algorithms are constantly changing, new tools and platforms pop up all the time, and even AI is shifting how content, marketing, and strategies work, making it harder to know what’s actually effective. On top of that, many beginners feel pressured to have everything perfect before they even start, which only adds to the frustration and slows progress.

The Truth About Online Success

Here’s what I wish someone had told me at the beginning:

Success online isn’t about being the smartest person in the room; it’s about avoiding the common mistakes that keep so many beginners stuck. Once you see them for what they are, the right strategies become a lot clearer.

I made every single one of these mistakes during my journey, and honestly, it was frustrating and discouraging. But once I recognized these patterns and made some key shifts, everything started to click.

Before we get started: If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed trying to figure out which tools you actually need to grow your blog or business, you’re not alone. The truth is, most entrepreneurs waste weeks (sometimes months) testing things that don’t work. That’s why I created a free guide with the essential tools and 6 simple steps to save you time, cut through the noise, and help you start building momentum right away. 1. Information Overload Paralysis: Too Many Ways to Make Money Online

Infographic showing 7 reasons why you’re struggling to make money online and how to fix them, including info overload, busy work, wrong metrics, overthinking, no audience, spreading too thin, and lack of patience.
7 common mistakes beginners make in online business and simple fixes to start earning

What’s happening: You’re drowning in information instead of swimming in action. Your bookmarks folder has 47 different strategies, you follow 15 different experts, and you spend more time learning about how to make money online than actually doing the work.

I get it, I was the same way…. I convinced myself that if I just found the perfect strategy, success would be inevitable. But here’s what I learned the hard way. There’s no perfect strategy, only consistent action.

How to fix it: Take a deep breath and choose just one method that resonates with you. For beginners, I often recommend affiliate marketing because it has lower barriers to entry and doesn’t require creating your own products right away.

I know it can feel like you need to master everything at once, but you don’t. As Adam Enfroy shared in an interview:

“Treat your blog like a startup, not a hobby. Focus on building domain authority and scaling what works instead of chasing every new trend.”

I found that advice freeing because it confirmed what I had already learned the hard way: success doesn’t come from trying to do everything, but from focusing on one path and taking consistent action.

If you’d like to dive deeper into Adam’s perspective, you can check out his full interview here.

Action Steps to Overcome Information Overload in Affiliate Marketing:

  • Pick one method that genuinely interests you
  • Bookmark only resources related to that method
  • Give yourself permission to ignore everything else for now
  • Set a kind but firm boundary with yourself: no new strategies for 90 days

I use Google Keep to write down my chosen focus and check it whenever I feel tempted to chase something shiny and new.

If you’re not sure what to use, here’s a guide on the essential tools and apps for running a successful affiliate marketing business. It can help you keep things simple and focused.

2. Best Ways to Make Money Online Without Daily Income Activities

What’s happening: You’re staying busy with tasks that feel productive but don’t directly bring money to your bank account. Things like perfecting your logo, reorganizing your workspace, or endlessly tweaking your website design.

Trust me, I spent weeks making my header “just right” instead of creating content that could actually help people and generate income.

How to fix it: Create a daily routine that focuses on activities that directly connect you with potential income. It doesn’t have to be overwhelming; small, consistent steps work beautifully.

Simple Daily Routine for Building Online Income (in 60 minutes):

  • 30 minutes: Create one piece of helpful content
  • 15 minutes: Connect authentically with your audience
  • 10 minutes: Share something valuable (could be an affiliate recommendation)
  • 5 minutes: Check what’s working and celebrate small wins

Start with what feels manageable for you. I use Grammarly to make my writing clearer and Canva to create simple, pretty graphics; both tools have made this routine so much smoother and more enjoyable.

3. How to Make Money Online: Tracking the Wrong Things

What’s happening: You’re measuring success by followers, likes, and shares instead of the metrics that actually predict income. These vanity metrics can make you feel like you’re making progress when you’re not moving toward your financial goals.

I used to check my Pinterest follower count obsessively while completely ignoring whether anyone was engaging with my affiliate recommendations.

How to shift your focus: When you’re just starting, instead of tracking likes, followers, or vanity metrics, focus on the numbers that actually help you build online income from the ground up

Key Metrics That Predict Financial Success Online:

  • People joining your email list
  • How many people click your affiliate links
  • Actual money earned (even if it’s just $5!)
  • Hours spent on income-generating activities

How to track them: To simplify this process, set up Google Analytics (it’s completely free) and create a basic weekly spreadsheet to record these metrics. Each small milestone counts; tracking your progress this way helps you see the real growth that moves the needle towards online income.

4. Make Money Online for Beginners: Don’t Overthink It

What’s happening: You’re spending weeks researching the “perfect” niche, product, or strategy instead of getting started and learning as you go. You’ve convinced yourself you need to know everything before you take your first step.

I did this too. I spent two entire months analyzing different affiliate programs before choosing one. Two months of zero action and zero income while I searched for certainty that doesn’t exist.

How to move forward: Embrace the beautiful messiness of getting started. You don’t need to have it all figured out, you just need to begin.

Action Steps to Start Your Digital Marketing Journey:

  • Choose something you’re 70% sure about and start there: Action teaches more than research ever will.
  • Give yourself permission to pivot later if needed: You can adjust your strategy as you learn what works.
  • Remember that taking imperfect action beats perfect planning every time: Small steps consistently taken move you forward.
  • Trust that you’ll figure things out as you go: Track results, learn from them, and adjust without stress

You’ve got this, and it’s okay if you don’t know everything yet.

5. Ways to Make Money Online: Building Your Audience

What’s happening: You’re creating content without strategically building a group of people who know, like, and trust you enough to consider your recommendations.

Even as I keep growing my online business, I know how easy it is to focus on posting content without really connecting with the people who will benefit most. Now, I make it a point to engage thoughtfully, responding to questions, sharing helpful insights, and building genuine connections, because that’s what turns content into results.

Email Marketing Steps to Help You Make Money Online:

  • Start collecting email addresses with every piece of content: Make it easy for readers to subscribe so you can stay connected and nurture your audience over time.
  • Create something helpful to give away (a simple checklist works great): A small free resource gives people a reason to engage and shows that you’re genuinely helpful.
  • Be genuinely useful and caring in every interaction: Answer questions, share tips, and connect authentically—real relationships make your content more impactful.

How to Build Trust Through Audience Building:

Focus on gathering people who genuinely want to hear from you and can benefit from what you share.

For email marketing, Kit is a great option. It’s designed with beginners in mind, offers a generous free plan, and has strong reviews that show it really helps people just starting out.

What most people like about Kit is how simple it makes things that can feel overwhelming at first, like setting up your email list, creating sign-up forms, and even automating follow-up emails so you can stay connected with your audience without being glued to your laptop.

You don’t need to be tech-savvy to use it. Everything is very drag-and-drop, which means you can focus more on writing helpful emails than figuring out complicated software. Plus, as your list grows, Kit gives you the flexibility to add features when you’re ready, so you don’t outgrow it right away.

If you’re ready to start building genuine relationships with your audience, you can try Kit for free and see just how simple it makes email marketing.

If you’re ready to dive deeper, I’ve put together a full post with email list-building tips that will make growing your audience feel much easier.

Email subscribers are so much more valuable than social media followers because they’ve specifically asked to hear from you.

6. Avoid Spreading Yourself Too Thin Online

What’s happening: You’re trying to be everywhere at once. I was guilty of this, too, posting on Pinterest, Facebook, X, Instagram, and my blog simultaneously. You’re going to exhaust yourself, and none of your platforms are going to get the attention they need to thrive.

I learned this lesson the hard way when I was barely keeping up with posting everywhere and seeing mediocre results across the board.

Focusing Your Content Creation for Better Results:

Choose one primary platform where your people actually spend time and pour your energy there first. Once you have mastered that one platform, then you can branch out to others.

My Primary Digital Marketing Approach:

For my business, I focus primarily on my blog with SEO optimization to drive organic traffic, while Pinterest serves as my main social platform, but works as a search engine. Pinterest is incredible for affiliate marketing because people are actively searching for solutions and products, and they’re in a buying mindset. You can even check out Pinterest Business for real audience insights on what people are searching for.

I post on Facebook and Instagram at the same time using Meta Business Suite—it’s super easy. A few hours later, Instagram automatically shares that content to Pinterest, giving me extra reach with almost no extra work. For beginners, though, I recommend focusing on one platform first. Master it, then you can start repurposing content to other platforms once you have a solid foundation.

Action Steps to Simplify Your Online Strategy:

  • Research where your ideal audience spends their time
  • Commit to mastering one platform before adding others
  • Use Linktree to keep all your important links organized in one place

I track everything through Google Analytics to see which content resonates most before expanding my efforts elsewhere. Additionally, if you already have content that’s not performing well, learning how to update old blog posts for SEO can breathe new life into your existing work and boost your rankings.

7. How to Make Money Online Quickly: The Patience Challenge

What’s happening: You’re expecting faster results than what’s typical and getting discouraged when success doesn’t happen on your timeline. You might be comparing your beginning to someone else’s middle or end.

This is so understandable. We live in an instant-gratification world, and online success stories often skip over the months of consistent work that came before the breakthrough.

Think of it like this: Success online is absolutely possible, but it’s more like growing a garden than flipping a switch. Every seed you plant (content you create, relationship you build, skill you develop) contributes to your eventual harvest.

Action Steps to Stay Consistent While Making Money Online:

  • Focus on what you can control: showing up consistently
  • Meanwhile, celebrate small wins along the way
  • Furthermore, remember that everyone’s journey is different
  • Finally, trust the process even when you can’t see immediate results

Additionally, your timeline will be unique to you, your niche, your audience, and your level of consistency. Some people see results in a few months, others take longer, and that’s perfectly normal.

I know it’s easy to get discouraged when you don’t see results right away, but patience really does pay off. Michelle Schroeder-Gardner put it beautifully when she wrote:

“It took me six months to earn my first $100, but that persistence has paid off in the long run. Remember, good things take time.”

I love that reminder because it’s exactly what I tell my own readers. You don’t need overnight success to win. You just need to keep showing up, one step at a time.

What Success Really Looks Like

Here’s the truth about make money online success that no one talks about: it’s not about hitting specific income targets by certain dates. Real success is developing skills that compound over time, building genuine relationships with people who value what you offer, and creating systems that work even when you’re not actively working on them.

Some months you might earn $10, other months $500. What matters is that you’re consistently moving forward, learning from what works and what doesn’t, and becoming more skilled and confident along the way.

Actions You Should Take Next

Right now, choose one thing from this post that resonated with you most. Just one. Write it down somewhere you’ll see it tomorrow, and take one small step toward implementing it.

Maybe it’s setting up Google Analytics, it’s creating your first Pinterest pin, or it’s writing one helpful piece of content. Whatever it is, approach it with curiosity and kindness toward yourself.

The difference between people who successfully make money online and those who don’t isn’t talent or luck—it’s showing up consistently, focusing on serving others, and being patient with the process while taking consistent action.

You have everything you need to start. Your success story is waiting for you to write it, one day at a time.

Remember: You don’t have to be perfect to be profitable. You just have to begin, be consistent, and be genuinely helpful. Start where you are, use what you have, and do what you can. I’m cheering you on.

  1. Hi Meredith,
Great information – one that I’d definitely would have liked to have when I started my online journey quite a few years ago…
We tend to really jump on the “shinny object” syndrome when we start something, find out it doesn’t work – even if we’ve only tried it for 2-3 weeks – and then start all over with another program… sigh….
That being said, the info you provide relative to being focused definitely is a big game changer for anyone ready to make it in their online journey.
BTW, the fact that you were able to make the change in your theme – essentially, flipping on a dime – sure shows that you’ve learnt a thing or two and are able to make changes without going crazy! Good job. Cheers!

    1. Hey Marc! I totally get the shiny object struggle. I’m sure we all have been there. It really does make a difference when you slow down and stick with one thing. Over time, it pays off in the end when you do. I’m glad you enjoyed my post, and yes, learning to adapt without stress has been a big step forward for me. I appreciate your kind words… The whole theme thing turned me for a loop, but I got through it, and things are back to normal. Thanks!

  2. I say the biggest culprit regarding online success is distraction. I am always attempting to clear my plate for the actions that matter and provide food for thought and value for my subscribers. Having said that, I don’t feel I am where I want to be. But I have hope. Glad you got the situation straightened out with your blog.

    1. Hey Kate! I hear you, distractions can be such a challenge online, I’m just as guilty. I really like how you’re focusing on giving value to your subscribers; that’s what makes the biggest difference. And I get you feeling like “you’re not there” yet. I feel the same at times, but like you said, having hope and keeping at it is what keeps us moving forward. Thank you for the kind words about my blog. It was a tough moment, but I worked through it and everything is back to normal.

  3. Hi Meredith! Wow, this is jam packed with incredible information and I love the new format of your blog. I’ve been doing this for a little while now and I find that all seven steps you’ve identified are critical. Thank you for putting them down in a way that is easy to understand and logical to follow. I find that I really need to focus on step number three right now and track better so that have a better idea of who my audience is, where my audience is and what will bring them value. Speaking of value, thank you for this extremely valuable post! have a great week!

    1. Hey Ernie! Thank you so much! I’m glad you like the new format and found the steps helpful. Luckily, I was able to work things out with my website and go back to my old theme. That freaked me out when my blog page crashed, but all is good now. Step three on my blog is such an important one. I’ve been working on that myself, and it really does give so much clarity about what people need. I’m glad you found value in that. Wishing you a great week too, and thanks again for your kind words!
