How to Humanize AI Content: Make Your Writing Sound Human

Creating AI-generated content can save small business owners tons of time, but it often sounds robotic. Learning to humanize AI content ensures your writing feels authentic, relatable, and natural. I discovered this when my kids first told me about ChatGPT.

To humanize AI content, use tone-setting prompts, add personal stories, and edit for natural flow. Read your writing aloud and polish it with AI humanizer tools to make it sound authentic and engaging.

The first time I used it, it seemed too formal, but it was helpful. It didn’t sound like me. Over time, I have learned how to guide AI to match my voice and style while still saving hours on content creation.

Why Humanizing AI Content Matters

AI tools are great for saving time, but the content can seem dull and impersonal without your unique touch. Your audience can detect when your posts don’t sound like you, and being real is essential right now when there is so much AI-generated content out there.

Your brand’s voice should build trust to keep people engaged, and eventually it will get them to do what you want.

When you add your own voice to your content, it not only makes it more fun to read but also makes it more memorable. When you humanize AI content, you create connections that will turn casual readers into loyal followers.

For instance, telling short personal stories, using conversational language, or adding humor can really help people become involved.

Use Prompts That Set Your Tone

One of the first lessons I learned was to use prompts. AI can write anything, but if you don’t give it direction, it won’t capture your style.

Here are some of my favorite prompts that help me humanize AI content:

  • “Write like I’m talking to a close friend over coffee. In a relaxed, friendly, and conversational tone.”
  • “Explain this as if I just discovered something exciting and want to share it. Keep it casual and authentic.”
  • “Keep the energy upbeat and human, enthusiastic but not pushy or salesy.”
  • “Write this as if I’m being honest and relatable about something I’ve learned the hard way. Something that sounds real and down-to-earth but hopeful.”
  • “Make it sound warm and encouraging, like a supportive friend who’s a few steps ahead of you.”

These prompts help AI produce content that sounds like me and not a robot. You can tweak them to fit your personality.

A little tip for you: Give your AI tool a brief paragraph that you wrote and ask it to look at your tone. Then, use one of these prompts to have it rewrite a small part of your article. Say both versions out loud.

If it doesn’t sound like you, change the question a little bit by adding information about your personality, sense of humor, or desired level of formality. The AI will learn how you speak over time, so you’ll spend less time editing while still sounding like yourself.

Take a Break and Revisit AI Writing

When I create content, I often don’t realize how it really sounds until I step away. I write my draft, and then I’ll take a break and come back to it later.

This allows me to catch sentences that don’t sound natural and go back and tweak them. Early on, I’m sure I posted something that didn’t sound like me. It’s all part of the learning process.

If you need help with creating content, then these 7 simple content creation AI tools might help with that.

Read Aloud for a Voice Check

Reading your content aloud is a simple but powerful trick. This helps you hear where sentences sound awkward or robotic. I do this with every blog post before publishing it. If it doesn’t flow naturally out loud, it needs a tweak.

Add Personal Stories and Quirks

Nothing humanizes content faster than personal anecdotes. Sprinkle in mini-stories, examples, or even small quirks from your life or business. These little touches make your content relatable and authentic.

For example, I shared earlier in this post how my kids introduced me to ChatGPT and how I realized it could save me hours, but only if I learned to give it my voice. AI doesn’t know how to do this unless you add it yourself or tell it to do it.

Use Tools to Polish and Help Humanize AI Content

QuillBot AI is a fantastic platform that I just started using in my business. This powerful tool will save you 10+ hours weekly.
My favorite features are the Humanizer and the AI Detector, but QuillBot has many other features that can help in your business, other than these.

While AI gets you 80% there, I like to use tools like QuillBot to polish my content after writing it with AI:

  • QuillBot Humanizer: Adds natural phrasing and humanizes AI content.
  • AI Detector: Checks if content feels too robotic.

These tools serve as a final editing pass to ensure your content sounds genuinely human.

Common Mistakes When Humanizing AI Content

Even with prompts and tools, some mistakes happen:

  • Over-editing: Too many tweaks can water down your message.
  • Too automated: Don’t rely solely on AI for creativity.
  • Skipping your voice: Without personal input, your content won’t connect.

I’ve been there, posting early drafts that didn’t sound like me. It’s all part of learning how to work with AI. That’s why you want to start learning AI now, because it is changing so fast. It will leave you in the dust if you don’t keep up.

My Workflow for Humanized AI Content

A laptop, notebook, and coffee cup showing a checklist labeled “Draft, Edit, Humanize, Publish,” symbolizing an efficient AI and human content creation workflow for small business owners.
Combining AI tools with a personal editing touch helps small business owners save hours while creating content that feels real and authentic.

Here’s the process I use now:

  1. I use ChatGPT or Claude to draft my blog after creating my content, following the tone prompts I provided.
  2. Stepping away has always helped me, and returning for a fresh read.
  3. I always read my content aloud to catch awkward phrasing.
  4. Then I’ll polish it with QuillBot Humanizer and check with AI Detector.
  5. After that, all you have to do is publish it and then monitor for engagement.

This workflow saves me hours every week while keeping my content authentic and relatable.

Final Thoughts: Make AI Writing Your Own

Humanizing AI content takes practice, but it’s worth it. Your audience will notice the difference between generic AI text and content that truly sounds like you.

Talk to AI, give it direction, and let it know who you are, what you are doing, and how you want it to help you. Don’t be afraid to experiment with AI. I have learned to talk to it like it’s my friend. Then, over time, it will become second nature for you.

  1. Hi Meredith,

Some great tips here. I often read content that screams AI, and I just don’t understand why people publish it ‘as is’ when it’s so easy to adapt it and make it a thousand times more engaging.

Storytelling is probably my favourite technique. We all relate to those little anecdotes from life, and it always helps to throw in some humour too.

And, like you, I also always step away before publishing. Read it again the next day or even a few hours later and you always spot so many things you want to change.

One other thing I’ve been doing a lot lately is creating ‘projects’ within the AI tool and asking the AI to reference what it knows about you already – like your story or anything else you’ve mentioned in chats. Think of it like a personal assistant. 🙂

    Dan

    1. Thanks, Dan! I couldn’t agree more. Storytelling really is the secret sauce. It’s what turns plain words into something people actually feel. And yes, stepping away before hitting publish is such a lifesaver! Funny how a short break can make those little tweaks pop right out at you.

I love your idea about creating projects within the AI tool. That’s such a smart way to keep your voice consistent and make the AI work with you instead of for you. Kind of like having that sunset calm moment before the creative spark kicks in again. Appreciate you sharing that tip!

  2. Hi Meredith, your insights here are invaluable because AI needs to be humanized as you say. I have found that my ChatGPT knows who I am and knows my voice and knows what it is that I wish to accomplish. That is no small feat.

Nevertheless, I may not pay as much attention as I should to my message as ChatGPT outlines for me. It has been brought to my attention for instance, that the dashes that AI uses is a red flag for others reading that I have just used AI. My generation hates AI. They simply do not understand it and perhaps neither do I but at least using it helps me to navigate around its potential.

Thanks for this insight into how AI is only humanized if we make it happen.

    1. Thank you so much for sharing that, Kate. I really appreciate your thoughtful perspective. You’re absolutely right, AI on its own can feel a bit robotic, but when we add our own personality, stories, and voice, that’s when the magic happens. It’s amazing that your ChatGPT has gotten to know you so well. That’s exactly how it becomes a true creative partner instead of just a tool.

I totally get what you mean about your generation’s hesitation with AI. It can feel unfamiliar or even intimidating at first, but you’re already ahead of the curve by using it and learning as you go. That curiosity is what makes all the difference!

  3. Hi Meredith,
Great post which is definitely “à propos” these days! AI can definitely be of help when building your online business and it definitely can also make it easier to bring it forward.
I like the fact that you also pushed the importance of “making it your own”. When you can use AI and put your own voice on it, you’ve definitely got a winner!

    1. Thank you so much! I’m really glad you enjoyed it. 😊 You’re absolutely right, AI can be such a powerful tool for building and growing a business, but the real magic happens when we blend it with our own voice and personality. That’s what makes everything feel genuine and unique. I appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts, it means a lot!

  4. I would imagine that this topic will be around for quite awhile considering the speed at which this technology is evolving. The next thing you know AI will sue everyone for plagiarism. LOL

    1. Haha, right?! 😄 Technology is moving so fast, it’s wild to even try to keep up sometimes. But you’re right… As AI evolves, these conversations about ethics, originality, and how we use it are only going to get more important. Thanks for the laugh and for sharing your thoughts!

  5. Hi Meredith – This is an extremely timely post as it seems everybody around me has discovered AI. And for those that are new to this technology it is often painfully obvious that they are not the ones speaking but some AI bot in the background. You give very practical tips on how to utilize this resource as a tool and not the author of content. Do you know if Quill bot and AI detector have free versions or are they paid? As usual, your blog posts hit home and are very relevant!

    1. Hey Ernie! Thanks so much for your kind words! 😊 I’m glad my post was helpful for you.

      About your question:
Yes, QuillBot does have a free plan, which lets you paraphrase up to 125 words at a time and use basic features. It also gives you access to the AI Detector, but with some limits, you can check up to about 1,200 words at a time.

I tested it for a week for free and liked it enough that I upgraded to the $20/month Premium plan. With Premium, you get unlimited paraphrasing, all writing modes, advanced grammar suggestions, and full access to the AI Detector, and more. It just makes creating content so much smoother and faster.

I hope this helps you. If you have any other questions just ask. 😊
