Welcome back to my blog! I hope everyone has had a great week. I haven’t really touched on this subject before very much, but now that I’ve been thinking differently about my brand, I wanted to dive into the power of branding. Reflecting on my journey, I realize that when I first started my business, branding wasn’t something I gave much thought to. In fact, I changed my website’s colors, banners, and overall style at least ten different times, simply following whatever felt right in the moment. I didn’t know much about the power of branding, and honestly, I wasn’t thinking about how I wanted my audience to perceive me or what kind of emotional connection I was creating.
Looking back now, I see that the power of branding is one of the most crucial aspects of building a successful business. Without a strong, cohesive brand, it’s incredibly difficult to stand out, gain recognition, and build trust with your audience. This realization has been a game-changer for me, and I’ve been doing more work behind the scenes to make sure my brand reflects my values and message.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that branding isn’t just about making things look nice. Instead, it’s about creating a clear and consistent identity that resonates with your ideal customers. Now that I’m putting myself out there more, especially on Pinterest, I’ve had to take a step back and reevaluate my brand. For example, the colors I initially chose might not be the best fit for the type of business I’m building. But, on the bright side, one thing I know for sure is that I love purple, and I want my brand to have a touch of my personality in it!
So, if you’re just starting or thinking about refining your brand, here’s what I wish I had known from the beginning about the power of branding.
What is Branding?
Branding is more than just a logo or a color scheme; it’s the entire identity of your business. It’s how you present yourself, how your audience perceives you, and the emotions your brand evokes. In fact, strong branding helps you stand out in a crowded market, build trust with your audience, and create a lasting impression. Therefore, it’s essential to invest time and effort in defining your brand early on.
Why is Branding Important?
A well-defined brand is crucial for several reasons:
- Recognition – Consistent branding makes it easier for people to remember and recognize your business.
- Uniqueness – It sets you apart from competitors and highlights what makes you unique.
- Emotional Connection – A strong brand creates an emotional bond with your audience, fostering loyalty and trust.
- Professionalism – A polished, cohesive brand signals credibility and reliability.
- Marketing Effectiveness – When your brand is well-defined, it becomes easier to create compelling content and marketing materials that align with your message.
5 Key Elements for Choosing Your Online Business Brand
As you begin to think about your own brand, consider these five elements:
- Memorability – Opt for a name and visuals that stand out and stick in people’s minds.
- Relevance – Ensure your brand reflects what you offer while allowing room for future growth.
- Domain Availability – Secure a matching domain to establish a strong online presence.
- Differentiation – Emphasize what makes your brand unique in the marketplace.
- Audience Alignment – Connect with your ideal customers by reflecting their values and interests.
The Role of Color in Branding
One of the most critical aspects of branding is color selection. Colors influence emotions and perceptions, shaping how people feel about your business. For example, here’s a breakdown of what different colors typically represent:
- Red – Bold, energetic, passionate; creates urgency and stimulates appetite.
- Orange – Friendly, cheerful, confident; suggests enthusiasm and affordability.
- Yellow – Optimistic, attention-grabbing; evokes happiness and mental clarity.
- Green – Natural, balanced; represents health, tranquility, and wealth.
- Blue – Trustworthy, calm, professional; conveys security and reliability.
- Purple – Luxurious, creative; associated with exclusivity and quality.
- Pink – Nurturing, feminine; evokes compassion and playfulness.
- Brown – Reliable, earthy; represents authenticity and wholesomeness.
- Black – Sophisticated, powerful; suggests authority and exclusivity.
- White – Pure, clean, minimal; represents simplicity and clarity.
- Gray – Neutral, balanced; adds sophistication and maturity.
For my own brand, I’ve leaned toward blue and purple because they align with trust, creativity, and professionalism. Also, I know that if I want my audience to feel a certain way when they see my content, I need to be intentional about my choices. This is where the power of branding really comes into play!
How to Choose Your Brand Colors
If you’re unsure about what colors to use for your brand, here’s a step-by-step approach to help guide your decision:
- Define Your Brand Identity – What are your core values? What do you want people to feel when they interact with your business?
- Understand Your Target Audience – Who are you trying to attract? What colors resonate with them?
- Analyze Competitors – Look at brands in your industry. What works well? How can you differentiate yourself?
- Explore Color Psychology – Research how colors influence behavior and emotions.
- Create a Cohesive Palette – Choose a primary color, a few complementary secondary colors, and a neutral for balance.
- Test Your Colors – Apply them to your website, linktree, social media, and other brand materials to see how they look in action.
Additionally, if you’re looking for an easy way to create and experiment with your brand’s look, Canva is a fantastic tool for designing and testing your brand materials. It offers a variety of templates, easy color customization, and helpful features to bring your brand to life. Another great resource is the Color Wheel, which is perfect for finding complementary colors and creating a balanced palette that works well together.
By taking the time to carefully choose your brand colors, you can ensure that your visual identity supports the message and values you want to communicate. Happy branding!
Final Thoughts
Ultimately, the power of branding is not just about looking professional, but about making an impact. The colors, fonts, and overall style you choose should align with your brand’s personality and connect with your audience in a meaningful way. So, by investing time in getting your branding right from the start, you’ll avoid the need for major changes down the road as you start creating content and building your business.
For me, I’ve realized that there’s still a lot of work to be done in rearranging my platforms and website to ensure everything aligns and matches. However, I know that defining my brand early is crucial for long-term success and it will get there. By establishing a strong, cohesive brand from the start, I’ll save myself time and effort later on.
If you’re just beginning your branding journey, take your time, research your options, and choose brand colors that truly reflect your business values and vision. Remember, your brand is the face of everything you do, so make sure it’s one you’re proud of and that resonates with your target audience!

Thanks so much for your thoughtful comment! You’re absolutely right—branding goes way beyond just colors! It’s about creating a vibe that connects with people. I’m so glad you love the purple! It felt like the perfect fit for my personality and the energy I want my brand to convey. As for settling on the right direction, it definitely took some trial and error. Hi Meredith – I have always known that branding is important and key as this is a first impression to spark an introduction and have interest. It truly is a hook. However, I have not applied this to my personal brand successfully not out of laziness but because I am color blind, and I really don’t pay attention to my own brand like I do others. You have motivated me! I love your brand and now that I see how truly important it is, I will get others, like my wife, to help me review the first impression I give to my business. Thank you!
Hi Ernie,
Thank you so much for your kind words! I’m really glad to hear that this has motivated you to give your personal brand a little more attention. It makes a huge difference in how people perceive your business, and I love that you’re involving others who can help with the details, having that support is key. I’m sure your wife would be happy to help too. Your brand will shine even more with that extra insight! Best of luck as you fine-tune it, and don’t hesitate to reach out if you ever need any tips along the way.

Thanks for breaking down the branding question. I know it’s important, and pick colors that represent healing and soothing the soul. My blog is plain. I like it that way because it represents simplicity, to me.
I will give this another thought.
